A horse is an interesting investment to insure, as it is both a living animal and possession – a combination of mortality, critical care and liability, Equestrian (or Equine) Insurance cover might be required (or customised) for your specific needs.

Niche Equestrian or Equine Insurance products would normally offer cover for Foals, Yearlings, Race horses, Mares, Stallions, Thoroughbreds, Studs and even syndicated horses.

Mortality can include: The unfortunate case of death due to disease, accident or humane euthanasia (decided by a  Veterinarian surgeon). Some Insurers might require a declaration of health disclosing any preexisting conditions. Extensions may protect you against loss of your horse due to riots, strikes, terrorism, civil commotion, public disorder and labour disturbance.

  • If the horse is syndicated, some products would allow for shares to be insured separately.
  • Upon taking insurance on a horse always report previous health conditions, as a Veterinarian evaluation and report may be required to confirm full recovery prior to policy acceptance.
  • Identification of the insured horse might be required: Passport, microchip, identification by a Veterinary surgeon or a colour photograph of the horse (the latter might be acceptable).
  • Certain Exclusions may apply: Polo, polo cross, breeding and endurance.
  • Age limitations may vary pending the products, but normally from as young as 1 day up to 12 years (a licensed Veterinarian report may be required to report health).
  • Some Insurers may offer the following: Insurance cover for horses in quarantine overseas, awaiting import into South Africa; South African horses competing overseas in various prestigious events; Insurance for many of our top riders in South Africa, as well as most of the major competitive yards across the country.   • Cover for horses in transit, or your horse boxes in particular (theft, fire, third party claims, or certain damage to your horse box), should also be considered.
  • The insured amount or determination of the value of the horse, may vary pending the product. Make sure you view and consider all of these options.
